18 wheeler rollover in willis
Just before 1 am Thursday morning reports came in from a private ambulance service of an 18-wheeler that had rolled over on the southbound feeder of Interstate 45 between Longstreet Road and FM 1097. When Willis Police arrived on the scene they found the truck loaded with 42,000 pounds of sausage had left the freeway struck a highway sign and rolled over as it ran onto the right median. That median had just been graded in preparation of planting grass when the rains turned it into heavy mud. The driver who was transported in stable condition to the hospital stated a car had cut him off causing him to go off onto the shoulder.
The truck is owned by Mikray Transportation from Mesquite, Texas.
Miistead Heavy Duty wrecker was able to raise the truck and reopen the feeder just after 3 a.m..
The North Montgomery Fire Department had to use their deck gun to wash the roadway as both lanes of the feeder were covered in heavy mud.
This is the second crash with an 18-wheeler in the past 24 hours at the same location. Most trucks seen tonight were traveling to fast for conditions and little traffic slowed for the crash site.
As the wrecker pulled away from the scene and began traveling southbound on the freeway at 50 mph an 18-wheeler approached in the left lane at close to 70 mph. That truck then drove onto the left shoulder not seeing the signage that the shoulder ended. He was able to get back in the moving lane of traffic just 50 feet before striking the end of a concrete barrier.
